Newbarns and Epochal decided to collaborate on a version of the historic Scottish recipe for a Wee Heavy (called Twelve-Guinea Ale) from Fowler’s brewery in Prestonpans, East Lothian from 1862. This beer, which became the archetype for the Wee Heavy style, was brewed with 100% Scottish Extra Pale malt, mashed incredibly thick, with a short boil, and heavily hopped to ensure historical accuracy.
Dark amber in colour, rich with flavours of treacle, and with a distinct lasting bitterness, this is one of the most distinct and ridiculous beers either brewery has produced.
